Jan David Legere was born March 09, 1935 in Lewiston, Maine. His Parents, Maxium Day and Gladyce Cloutier Legere, moved to South Portland Maine in 1942 soon after Pearl Harbor. Jan's Dad went to work in the South Portland Shipyards as a Safety Inspector during WWII. Day, as Jan's Dad was called, had attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Art in the early 1930's. Day was also a Photographer and a Private Pilot having flown out of Augusta. Maine with known flyers of the times such as Amelia Heirhart, Dave Putnum, Whiley Post and Jack Dodge. Dodge later became a WWII Fighter Pilot Ace.

Jan Legere attended South Portland Highschool taking two years of double-period Art and Letterpress Printing. He graduated in 1953 with a 2-year working Scholarship to the Portland Museum School of Fine and Applied Art. While attending Art School, he was employeed parttime as a Letterpress Type Compositor and Pressman at Hall and Hall Commercial Printers of Portland, Maine.

In 1956, Jan married Shirley Morrell who he met in 1953 on their first day of Art School. Together, during and after their Art School Years, most of their free time was spent sketching and painting along the Maine Coast. In 1961, they moved to Effingham, Illinois where Jan was employed by E.W. Petty Company as their Art Director creating Direct

Mail Pieces for their many Chicago and St. Louis Clients. While in Illinois, Jan completed 5 years of Correspondence Study with the Famous Artists Schools of Connecticut obtaining a Certificate of Graduation.

The Central Illinois Summers proved to be too hot and humid for their thick Maine blood. Now (1963) with 3 Children and another on the way, Jan landed an Art and Copywriting job in much cooler Warren, Pennsylvania with Blair Corporation, a National Fashion Mail Order Company. He understudied his boss and Vice President of Advertising, Charles A. Pettibone. Charlie was an accomplished Painter and their mutual interests in Fine Art was shared over the years. Jan "retired" from Blair Corporation as VP Advertising in the fall of 1975 to persue Fine Art Painting full time.
