Title: "Ed Howard's Horse Barn" / Private Collection
Description: 26" x 19" Watercolor on Fabriano Heavy Weight Paper

Subject: Ed Howard farmed this place back in the 1930's. It is a hill-top farm on Irvine Run Road in Brokenstraw Township, Youngsville, Pennsylvania. Our place on Irvine Run Road bordered Ed's place to our West. Ed Howard, according to our neighbor to our North, Guy Nelson, took sick one unusually heavy-snow winter in the 1940's. The Lake Erie "lake-effect" snows were so heavy that neighbors had to take Ed off the farm on horseback. After that, Ed never went back to his farm. It remained abandoned ever since.

One bright sunny morning in the late 1960's, I rode up there, tied my horse in Ed's old horse barn. I painted this watercolor just as this corner of the barn was back then. One of Ed's horse-eveners was still standing in the corner inside the side door. I brought it back with me that morning and still have it today as a "keep-sake" from Ed Howard, who I had never met... yet kind of got to know from doing many sketches and paintings of his abandoned place.
